Juneathon Day 23: Swim

2015-06-23 21.32.03My knee still hurts, woe is me! My friend Becky, who’s a physio, thinks it’s “runner’s knee” – I looked it up online and it certainly sounds like the kind of discomfort I’m feeling, so there’s nothing to be done but rest 😦

So in terms of running, the rest of this week is a write-off – I’ll see how my leg feels at the weekend and will maybe give parkrun a go on Saturday if it feels OK. Hope I can get my marathon plan back on track!

But, I still have to do my Juneathon activity, which means I have to get a bit more creative, so today I went for a swim for the first time in ages!

I’m not a brilliant swimmer – I mean, I can swim quite a long way, but I’m not technically very good. I blame this on the fact that when I had swimming lessons at primary school, I’d just had an ear operation, which meant I couldn’t get water in my ears. Consequently I only ever learned how to do breast-stroke without putting my head underwater. I do put my head under water now actually, but still only do breast-stroke or occasionally backstroke – I’m useless at crawl!

I did 60 lengths of my local pool, which is only 20 m long, so *quick mental calculation* that’s 1200 m in 45 minutes. My knee was a little bit twingey on the kicks but not too bad.

Juneathon Day 22: Netball umpiring

My left knee has been twinging a little bit recently but I really felt it as I was coming down the last hill at the end of my 6 mile run yesterday. Perhaps a little foolishly I then walked to and from Exhall & Wixford Cricket Club where hubs was playing cricket that afternoon (about two miles each way, up and down hills) and it felt more sore. Today it’s really sore – waaah!

I wasn’t rostered on to play netball this evening, which is probably just as well, but I did try shadow-umpiring, and my knee was actually quite painful to run on. I moved about 1 mile over the course of the game, but mostly I kind of skipped and hopped to avoid putting too much weight on the bad leg.

I’m only a week into my marathon training! But there’s no way I can run on it when it feels like this, so I guess I’m forced to rest awhile. If anything, want to make sure it’s better for my running tour of Prague next week! I’ll have to get creative with my Juneathon exercises over the next few days!

Juneathon Day 15: Netball match

2015-06-15 20.46.24Tonight’s opponents in the Redditch Summer League were Henley Hotshots, a team who are far, far better than us but actually very nice. Some teams in this league get a bit aggressive and bitchy – especially when they’re absolutely thrashing us! – but this team are really friendly so we almost (almost) didn’t mind them hammering us 51-16!

I played Goal Keeper for the whole game today, so according to my Garmin I didn’t move very far in terms of distance, but given the number of goals scored against us I was certainly kept busy!

Juneathon Day 11: Netball training

2015-06-11 20.08.13Had a really good netball training session tonight – I played GD and had a nice run around! Also ran to and from the school where we train, although it’s less than half a mile each way so according to my self-imposed rules I can’t count it towards my 1000 mile challenge – only distances over 1 mile count.

It all counts for Juneathon though! 🙂

Tonight I am sitting in doing some exam marking so although I haven’t done my Blogilates stretches yet, I’m going to do them in between papers to break it up a bit!

I put on my running gear to go for a run this evening, but then I remembered that someone was supposed to be coming to collect a table I’d put on Freecycle.

The lady who wanted the table said he son would come to collect it “after work” so I figured that would probably be some time between 5 and 6, give or take half an hour. So I waited. And waited. When it got to half past 6 I decided to knock the run on the head and do a workout video from YouTube instead – at least that way I would be home if he came.

But he never came. Grrr!!

Anyway, I did this video, followed by today’s Blogilates stretches – new pose of the day was pigeon pose.

Juneathon Day 8: Netball umpiring

I wasn’t rostered on to play in our netball match this evening, but I went along as a substitute anyway. But then so did a few other people so I wasn’t really needed! Instead, since I’m kind of trying to learn to umpire, I shadowed our umpire Kate as she refereed another game. It gave me a little bit of a run-around at least – only 2.5km but better than nothing! I forgot to take a picture, sorry!

I also forgot to do my Blogilates Stretch Project stretches yesterday, so I did a double set today. Yesterday’s new pose was single-leg pulls, and today’s was kind of half a backwards roll!

Juneathon Day 4: Netball training

I lasted posted a picture in my netball kit on Monday, Day 1 of Juneathon. We played an outdoor match and it was the worst netball playing conditions ever – dark, cold, windy, rainy, and even the odd hailstone! Yet at tonight’s netball training session, where we play indoors, it was glorious sunshine! Something’s not quite right about that…

Never mind, my activity is done for the day! I also did my Blogilates Stretch Project – 30 seconds each of Days 1, 2 and 3, which were plank, up dog and down dog, and today’s new stretch – child’s pose. I also had  bit of a walk at lunchtime to go to the bank and do some other errands, so all in all, Day 4 is done!

I’ve been a bit complacent recently. I worked really hard towards the two half marathons I did in March and April this year, beating my PB – and then again! – and then I got a fab PB in the 10K I did in May. After that, I kind of slacked off….I have another 10K in a couple of weeks time, but I guess 10K seems kind of, well – dare I say it? – easy now (!!!) so I haven’t been training nearly as hard. It was also the hubby’s birthday in mid-May, and we seem to have stretched it out for two weeks or more, going for drinks with various people, or meals out…it’s fair to say we’ve eaten like pigs lately!!

So, I guess it’s time for another challenge to keep me on the straight and narrow – I have a target of 1000 miles to complete this year, after all, so there’s no time to ease off! I need to have run at least 500 miles by the end of this month to keep on schedule!

Fortunately, it’s the 1st of June, so that means it’s time for Juneathon! Juneathon is a challenge to “jog, log and blog” every day throughout the month of June. There’s no minimum distance you need to complete – actually, you don’t even have to run, just do some form of exercise, but like the 5×50 challenge it’s all about “choosing activity over inactivity” and trying to change your exercise habits. I certainly need this right now!

So to kick-start the month of June, today’s activity was playing Wing Defence in a netball match in possibly THE worst netball-playing conditions I’ve ever played in! Even though it’s June 1st, it was cold, it was windy, it was raining, and at times it even HAILED on us – ugh! And to make matters worse, we lost. Terribly.

I enjoyed it though 🙂

The-Stretch-ProjectI’m also going to try the Blogilates 30-day stretch challenge during June, because I am reeeeeaaaally inflexible and terrible for not stretching after exercise! I think you’re just supposed to do ‘pose of the day’ for 30 seconds, or 15 seconds each side if it’s a pose you can do on each side. However, I really need to increase my flexibility and do some serious stretching, so I think I’m going to try building it up – so do pose of the day AND all the preceding ones. Maybe after all that I will have some hope of achieving the splits on Day 28!?!? Yeah right! But it’ll be interesting to see how it goes!

2015-05-05 19.42.03We normally play netball matches on a Monday night, but as it was a bank holiday yesterday everything was moved to today instead. I wasn’t rostered on to play for our team tonight, but I am trying to learn to umpire, so I shadowed one of the umpires officiating another game instead.

WORST WEATHER EVER!

It was howling with rain one minute, bright sunshine the next, then gusty winds, then hailstones, but mostly heavy heavy rain. Ugh. I was kinda glad I wasn’t playing as at least I could wear a waterproof jacket! There was a pretty rainbow though…
